The ranking

The grey figure after each average is how far it could reasonably be off, given how many people from that country have completed the test. Where two of those ranges overlap, the order between them is not a real finding.

117 countries have taken the test; 72 of them have the 5 results needed to appear above. Everyone else is on the map in grey. Repeat visitors are counted once, by their network address, so one enthusiast cannot move a country.

What this is not

It is not a measure of how well countries speak English. The people here are the ones who went looking for an English vocabulary test, which is a very particular sort of person, and a different sort in each country. Somewhere that only keen students find this site will beat somewhere everybody tries it, and that tells you about the visitors rather than the place.

Network addresses place people roughly. A VPN puts someone in the wrong country entirely, offices and mobile networks can resolve to a head office far from the user, and small countries are the ones this hurts most. Nothing here is precise enough to argue over a few hundred words.
